About UKDN

UKDN is a unit within the Faculty of Geography at UGM responsible for all matters relating to domestic cooperation. In 1950, the Faculty of Geography at UGM was originally one of the departments within the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy and Philosophy at UGM, namely the Department of Earth Sciences. In 1956, this faculty was reorganised into the Faculty of Literature and Culture at UGM. At that time, the Department of Earth Sciences was developing rapidly. The role of Earth Sciences experts became increasingly evident in development and their scope of work expanded, until eventually the Faculty of Literature and Culture at UGM allowed the Department of Earth Sciences to become the Faculty of Geography at UGM (1 September 1963, which is commemorated as the faculty’s founding date). Upon its establishment, the faculty comprised two departments (Programmes of Study), namely the Department of Physical Geography and the Department of Human Geography. In its subsequent development, the faculty was subsequently established to comprise 3 departments with 7 Programmes of Study (Prodi), namely: The Department of Physical Geography comprises the Programme of Study in Geomorphology and Land Resources, and the Programme of Study in Hydrology; The Department of Human Geography comprises the Population and Labour Programme and the Settlement and Resources Programme; The Department of Technical Geography comprises the Cartography and Remote Sensing Programme; and The Regional Development Planning and Transmigration Programme, which is jointly managed under the Dean’s authority. Subsequently, in 1991, the names of the departments and study programmes were revised as follows: The Department of Physical Geography oversees the Physical Geography programme; The Department of Human Geography oversees the Human Geography programme; The Department of Cartography and Remote Sensing; and The Department of Regional Development Planning. Following the issuance of Ministry of National Education Decree No. 1/2006, which granted UGM the authority to open and close study programmes, the faculty undertook a restructuring process to achieve greater efficiency, guided by academic developments and societal demands. From 2007 onwards, the Faculty of Geography at UGM has offered three undergraduate (Bachelor’s) programmes, namely: 1) Geography and Environmental Science; 2) Cartography and Remote Sensing; and 3) Regional Development.
